Blog #5

PLEASE BE SURE TO POST TO BOTH BLOG #4 AND #5. Again, your responsibility is to post an original idea and then go back to comment on someone else's statement.

The topic for this blog is... how do you handle role conflict? Explain with an example.

  1. An example of "role conflict" would be having to attend my place of employment( to make money) and on the same day having an exam at school(my education). However, considering that I work in a group home facility were I know that my assistance is always needed (whether its love, attention, guidance etc.) I must I be there and besides that's what pays the bills. I also have to remember that the exam is more important because without scoring high and receiving a degree I will forever remain working at a group home as a paraprofessional, however, nothing is wrong with that but I would love to see myself owning one myself. So, with that being said, I would handle that situation by simply questing to switch with an employee or having the day off to take my exam if all fails then I'll be seeking for another job, in which who can accomodate my school schedule.

  3. I experienced roll conflict alot when I was in Law Enforcement. There would be times, I would be on patrol, make a traffic stop. Upon approaching the vehicle, I would notice car seats, occupied with children in the back seat. I would also notice, a mom in the drivers seat, very upset and stressed. Each time this happened, I had conflicts of Empathy for her, because I am a mom, and I understood clearly the stress of being late to work and having to drop the kids off at daycare. While I was a mom, I was also an officer of the law, and needed to do my job.

The way I dealt with the problem, was to evaluate the situation. If the violation was life threatening, I would, inspite of my empathy, issue a citation. If the violation was not life threatening, I would only give a warning.

  4. Comment on A. Sunshine's blog:

Absolutely, working and going to school full time can be real hectic. Sounds like you really have your priorities together. While we are needed, on our jobs everyday for whatever reason,if by chance, we have to take a class during working hours, some how we have to make it work. Being employed is so important, but progressing with bigger career ideas is important too. Thanks for sharing that Sunshine, lets me know, I am not the only one dealing with this roll conflict.

  5. First, role conflict is like a battle that you struggle to find a reasonalbe answer between yourself and the obstacle or task that you are up agaisnt. (my on definition in my words) With that said, I often find myself with a struggle to choose between the people i serve ( by maintaining a client and staff relationship). We suppose to maintain a therapuetic relationship with our clients but often times i find myself violating those rules with my clients. This stuggle could jeoperdize my job but my personality want allow me to not hear their problems out. Often times the special needs population voice go unheard or their questions go unanswered. Those same people often times don't have family members that interact with them and staff members within their living facilities that shut their conversations out. So my conflict i deal with is just interacting socially, verbally, and mentally with them after hours by giving them my phone number is not accepted by company policies!

  7. One example of role conflict is when i have to be at work but i can,t go to class to take a very important exam. I know that would upset me totally because to me my eduation is very important to me.I guess some times people have to do things that they don.t want to do.I would rather take the exam.

  8. Handling role conflict between being a friend and an employee is not difficult but sometimes upsetting to me. I just started my job at the mall and often times I work the closing shift, especially Fridays and Saturdays . My friends like to go out on those days to the clubs and movies and I like to do those things also, but by the time I leave work I am too tired to even go. The reasons I work are that I have money to pay bills and to build work experience. I dont stay too upset for long though when I don't go out.

  9. Hey Everyone... This is Sheila. Role Conflict is when a persons professional / social prosition interfers with the duties of the role relating to others.
Example:I have experience role conflict not to long ago with my 15 year old sister. As a sister I wanted her to feel like she can trust me and we can talk about anything. As a mother if something was going on with my child I would want to know. I was torn but I had to make a hard decision. I weighed it out to take the role as being a mother. It was hard.

  10. I think you should choose the one with the greatest priority. That decision is based on the person. One example is going to work or calling out of work because your toddler child is sick. I often chose my kid.

  11. Hi my name is Shannon Lott in I am in Introduction to Sociology there is a term we learn called role conflict. Role Conflict to me what I feel it means is to be able to multi-task. For example you may be college who works. You must able to find to study, eat, exercise, find time for leisure activities, and rest.

The comment that Sheila made about how she had to act as mother figure to her kid sister that is a good example role conflict.

  12. hello this Montika Moss.
I have to go through role conflict everyday. it would be between being a tom boy and a girlie girl. there are moments when i am caught in between two because i can compare my self with both sides. some say i think too much like a guy. my closes friends are girls and i am behind them 100 weather they think i am or not but in some cases a guy may be in more of the right choice so some times i dont exactly know what to say besides just stay out of it. cause i dont want my girls thinking i am betraying them, cause that is not the case.

  13. This is Kenny Williams one way to control role conflict is by seperate the two. I try not to put myself in that situation. My biggest role conflict right is being a coach and student. I have to make sure that the player respect me on and off the field. The way I do that is try and be a role model for the player and also be a big brother figure to all of them. . .

  14. A role conflict that I face is when I'm at work and my job is to do one thing but when we are short staffed I kind of have to do it all. What upsets me is that my manager and the assisstant managers like to give me managerial responsiblities but that's not what my job title is and i don't get paid any extra for it. So I have become the trainer for all the new people that gets hired. So I have to make sure that they learn everything they need to know as well as continue to do my job and be fast and efficient. So what I have done is train them by letting them watch me for a period of time, and then let them try for themselves (under my close supervision of course). So far it has work and the five people that I have train caught on quickly and are doing well.

  16. how do i handle role conflict. well not until this year of school i realli had to deal with role conflict. this year at shaw bothe my sister and my cousin are attendind shaw right along with me. At first i thought it was a bad idea, because i didnt feel like sharing my school with them, unlike being at home where i have to share everything wiht them.
Now with them being here with me i have to be another person. when im with my friends i can have fun, let loose and just be comfortable, and when i'm with them i have to be more like a role model and watch what i say and do, because i always want to set a good example for them.
