Welcome to the Blog -- Topic 1

Welcome to the course blog! I am truly excited about teaching this course, and I hope that you find it to be an enlightening and enjoyable educational experience. As mentioned in class, we will be confronting some challenging issues, many of which might generate strong intellectual and emotional reactions. This blog serves as a mechanism for everyone to process these responses and to learn through engagement with others. Since none of us is as smart as all of us, we can gain further insights by taking in the ideas of our learning community members. While we may disagree on here, it is essential that we always demonstrate respect and maintain an open mind.

In order to participate, you will need to have an active gmail account (www.gmail.com -- it's free). You can obtain a free account by going to either website and signing up. Once you have accomplished that task, return to this page and log in (go to top-right of screen and click on Sign In). Then, click on the heading "Welcome to the Blog -- Topic 1" above. If you scroll down, you can read my instructions and enter your comments in the box. Come back a little while later, click on the same link, and read your colleagues' posts. It would also be great if everyone could at least publish their photo in the "Followers" section on the right-hand side of the page. That way, we can learn each other's names and connect faces with ideas.

I will post a blog topic for almost every week during the term. For each topic, I would like for you to produce a 1-2 paragraph thoughtful comment that shows your honest reflections and includes some type of contribution to our understanding of the issues at hand. (I will hand out examples of a good blog in class.) Then, after reading the posts of your classmates, I'd like for you to jump back into the conversation -- either by critically responding to someone else or by adding to your previous post with further insights. Feel free to continue the dialogue if you wish. You will be graded on the value-added nature of your overall posts over the course of the term. Although I am certain that you will get the hang of this blog thing soon, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

TOPIC ONE: What is society? Is it just all the people together... or is there something more to it? Does society influence you, and in what ways? The original posts are due by Friday August 28th, with follow up posts expected by Monday August 31.

  1. I believe that a society is not only all the people together but also how those people work together and interact with one another. Society influences the way that we think, act and how we generally feel about things. It is my belief that society decides what's "hot" and what's "not". Foe example if someone buys a pair of shoes that they like but they are told by multiple people that the shoes are ugly that people will probably not wear them anymore. To me a society is people feeding off of one another build each other up as well as tearing each other down.

  2. I kinda agree on that because if someone is hanging with there friends and they have this out fit on that they love and when there friends see them with it on they make a smart remark about it they wont wear it anymore of because of what there friends said. Society is basically telling the young kids "This is how u live"! by listening to what there are being told.
I also think that most people listen to what other people say and not what they think they should do.

  3. society i think is what we make of it....what we fall into and seem to believe.....i think that i do let society influence me in a lot of things i do....but on another note i am my own indiviual......for example i didnt use to wear sandals because i thought that my feet weren't pretty because i have a dwarf toe on my left foot....well today a young lady said a rude remark about them and i simple kept on the sandals i was wearing.....because i am not going to let her bring me down to thinking that your feet should look a certain way in a sandal or in general......i do think that society is everyone in a whole.. we bring together this image an we follow it

  4. A society is a group of people that make up a whole , makes up a community and make up the world... our veiws i belive are set on society veiws. if society see's sumthin wrong then more than likey we see it as being wrong.. the way we dress the way we talk and the different activities we do are most likey because society accepeted them

  5. I think that society is a group of people living together as a community with many different personalnities. This group has many different agreements and disagreements about certain things such as politics. People within society as are unique in many different ways. A few of these differences are langauge, the way people dress and religion.

  6. The Webster definition of society is an extended social group having a distinctive cultural and economic organization. My definition of society is a group of people, who make up a community, organization, or any kind of social environment, that have common interest such as culture, religion, and Geographic’s. Society has a huge impact on our activities of daily living, the way we think, and act on a daily basis’s, society determines what’s socially acceptable. Society does influence me in all aspects of my life such as the way I carry myself, speak, dress, my outlook on life, how I want to live and even attending college.

  7. I see a society as being many different people from different backgrounds coming together to make up a cummunity. They help each other to grow and learn new things. I think society influences everyone in many different ways. People may talk a certain way or wear certain clothes to fit in with societies standards.

  8. I believe that society is the learned and cultured environment that we exist in. I think that all the people together is just a portion of society; otherwise it would be known as the humanrace or mankind. I think laws, beliefs and education play major roles in the maintenance of a society. Society influences everyone. Regardless of how little or small. After awhile, those things around tend to impact our responses to them. For me, i was influenced by society to go back to school. I had family and peers pursuing education to move forward therefore influencing me.

  9. Society, I think is everything around us. I feel our society is influenced by the way people talk, dress and walk. Also there was cultural, social and political differences that make up a society. I come from a society where encomically people, like myself, are struggling to survive everyday. There aren't enough jobs avaiable for us to earn a decent living. Despite that, I feel, our society will usually come together when it will benefit us globally. Having differences within our societies makes us who are as individuals.

  10. I Find that people love to follow and not do very much leading. You have kids who see thing on TV and try to be just like what they see. Right and wrong go out the door must of the time when they are trying to be that which they are not. But their surrounding does help to push them into it.

  11. I agree with acrow because kids do follow example especially from tv....society gives the world this image of how a human should look and what size they should be.....so kids who don't fit that persona try go to the extreme and try harder and do things that are very unhealthy for example.....(aneroxa, bilemia, i.e) which can lead to many health issues ( this is precious fowler i couldnt figure out how to post this so i had to choose anonymous)

  12. Society is the community in which I reside, followship, belong and gather with others. Society is the virual world that constructs the laws and expectations in which we abide.

  13. Society is a group of people. In a society everyone's actions, thoughts, and choices matters. We as people feed off of one another. For example, if there is a player on a basketball team who is negative, sooner or later, other players will start to get the bad vibe, and instead of making the situation better, they will also start to think and act in negative ways. I tend to listen to people who are around me. I know it is not good, but everyday i work on it. I also second guess myself, cause i am too worried about how others around me may think.

  14. society is like, society is....omgsh ! ! !
society is bigger than you and me, all of us combined. Society is what makes us all different, is what makes me tall and you short. Society indentifies us all; the people we are and the people we will be. And at the same time it can break you down and kill you !
Society influences me to bigger and better than next. To love who i am, where i'm from and where i meant be going.

  16. Its crazy how everyone views are similar. When people talk about society, its about the influence people has around us. Acrow pointed out, us as society, there are not a lot of leading. We copy everything someone else do and try to make it own. I also agree with Joan talks about how society determines what hot and what's not. . . That's a fair statement because a lot of time we try and keep up with the hottest thing out. . .

  17. Its funny how we all come from different backgrounds, but we pretty much have the same outlook on society and the way it affects us on a daily basis's.

  18. Hey Dennis,
I think that's a great definition of society, the variety of people and their differences.

  19. Society is thought to be viewed as a whole as in everyone within the world. However, I view society as being those in which you affiliate yourself with all the time(ex. people from school, in your community, or even church etc). Does society influence me? Yes in a positive way and in a negative way! However, I affiliate myself with positive people, but in order to keep up with what is going on in the world(society as a whole). I also have to be expose to the negative side(ex.rap music)! Don't get offended because not all rap music is negative, but in order to keep up with the way in which society moves you have to move with it not to say being exactly apart of it.

  20. preciouscali, I give people like yourself a pat on the back simply because you appear to stand up for what you feel is right(strong-minded). However, you must understand that people(society) fear what they do not understand. So, they have the tendency to make negative comments to override the fact that they are too afraid to ask questions. For all you know, that young lady could have been suffering from that same problem, but due to her own insecurities and shame she figured it would be fun to laugh at you. I encourage you to continue doing what you do, wearing what you wear, and simply not letting what others say(even society itself) dictate your ways of living life(even if it is something as small as the shoes you wear)!

  22. society-"A group of humans broadly distinguished from other groups by mutual interests, participation in characteristic relationships, shared institutions, and a common culture". society is is based off of social relationships among humans. people tend to gravitate towards what makes them comfortable. so i think it goes deeper than people just being together

  23. Hey this is Tiffany. I do not think that we should ever judge a person's culture. Sure, we have our own and it may seem odd and different to others, but we want respect as well. I do believe that we have the rifght to be inquisitive and to question that in which we do not understand beut never to judge.

  24. Tammie- Society is composed of several diffrent groups of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds to form one society.

  25. Society, is a group of humans who exist together and have mutual interests, participate in relationships and have common culture. I believe the first day you walk into preschool,
you become influenced by society. Your taught to fit in. Your taught what is acceptable behavior and what is not. When your not in school, you have the media that influence behavior, fashion, music. Society influence is all to a certain extent

  26. Comment on Kenny William's Blog:

I agree with you. It's amazing, on a daily bases we are influenced by society. What's Hot,
What's not. Its scary to think how we just automatically behave a certain way, without thinking about the origin of our behavior
